Can You Drive with a Leaking Shock? Leak Severity Guide
Why Shocks Leak
Aged seals, scratched rods, or dirt from torn boots cause oil to seep past the seal. Leak = lost damping.
Three Levels
Level 1: Seepage
- Thin oil film on body, no drops
- Can drive; monitor 1-2 months
Level 2: Leak
- Visible oil, dirt sticking, drops
- Damping clearly down (bouncy)
- Replace soon; avoid long highway trips
Level 3: Severe
- Body soaked, dripping; damper failed
- Body roll, nose dive, uneven tire wear
- Replace immediately - safety risk
Advice
- Clean and observe to confirm real leak
- Level 2+: replace in axle pairs
- Check covers, mounts, springs together
