CNC Lathe Tool Setting: Trial-Cut and Automatic Methods
Purpose
Tool setting tells the CNC where each tool tip sits in the machine frame. Wrong setting = every size off.
Trial Cut
- Cut OD manually, record X, measure diameter
- Face the end, record Z
- Enter values in tool offsets
- Cut first piece, fine-tune
Presetter
- In-machine: tip touches sensor, records automatically
- Offline presetter: measure before loading
- Great for many tools, batches
Error Sources
- Heavy manual infeed on trial cut
- Worn tips without compensation
- Measurement error
- Thermal drift (warm-up helps)
