What It Is

At shift start, tool change, material change or program change, the first piece is fully inspected before batch production.

When Required

• Shift start
• Insert/tool change
• New material batch
• Program/parameter change
• After machine repair

Checks

• Visual: Burrs, scratches, chatter, chipped edges
• Critical sizes: Fits, lengths
• GD&T: Roundness, concentricity, perpendicularity
• Roughness: Out-of-spec means parameter/tool issue

Records

• Log: time, machine, part, operator, values
• Keep first-piece sample
• Stop and isolate on any out-of-spec
