Hydraulic vs Rubber Engine Mounts: Pros, Cons and Selection
Two Designs
Rubber mount: Rubber + metal frame, simple and cheap.
Hydraulic mount: Internal fluid chambers and orifices dissipate vibration energy - better damping.
Comparison
- Rubber: Cheap, durable, simple; mediocre idle damping
- Hydraulic: Quiet idle, smooth ride; pricier, leak risk
Selection
- Keep hydraulic if OEM was hydraulic (rubber may shake at idle)
- Upgrade to hydraulic only if dimensions match
- Quality rubber mounts are fine for budget-focused owners
Notes
Replace mounts in sets. Never heat or hammer hydraulic mounts (damages internal oil passages).
