Chassis Undercoating: Application Process and Material Selection
What It Is
Undercoating is a sprayed elastic layer on the chassis for rust, stone-chip and noise protection - not a bolt-on plate.
Materials
- Asphalt: Cheap but cracks and smells - fading out
- Rubber/resin: Elastic and adherent - mainstream
- Water-based: Low odor, needs careful application
Process
- Clean: mud, oil and rust
- Mask exhaust, shaft, sensors and harness
- Spray 2-3 cross coats to thickness
- Cure at room temperature for 24h+
Worth It?
- Yes: Coastal or salted-snow areas and rough roads
- Maybe not: Dry regions, new cars already protected
- Not a substitute for real rust repair
Huami Tip
Undercoating protects sheet metal; rubber aging and bearing wear still need periodic checks.
