What Is a Subframe

The subframe carries the engine, suspension and steering as one assembly, mounted to the body through bushings - the chassis "second skeleton".

Functions

• Modular assembly: Powertrain + suspension prebuilt, precise body mount
• Isolation: Bushing filter for road and engine vibration
• Crash energy: Participates in crash management

Full vs Partial

• Full frame: Closed rails + crossmembers - stiff, sporty/premium
• Partial (cradle/H): Open - light, cheap, service-friendly, mainstream
• Platform mates often differ by subframe

Service

• Worn subframe bushings: loose chassis, pull, noise
• Hard hits can bend it (alignment odd - check)
• Bushing replacement needs a press
