Strut Bearing Noise: Inside or Outside? How to Locate the Sound
Where the Sound Comes From
The strut bearing sits at the top of the strut. Noise travels through the tower into the cabin, so its source is easy to misjudge.
Locating Tips
- Outside: Have someone turn the wheel while you listen at the wheel arch - clearest near the tower
- Inside: Sounds like under the dash/firewall, but it is the tower conducting
- Pattern: "Pop/clunk" when turning at standstill or low speed - damaged cage or race
Differentiate
- Tie rod ends: Noise on rough roads, not necessarily when turning in place
- Steering gear: Play, vague straight-ahead
- Mount rubber: Squeak over bumps, not when turning
Confirm
- Remove the dust cap and inspect the bearing
- Rotate by hand - feel for catch/play
- Severe cases: loose balls, binding turns
