Brake Noise Causes: Pad and Rotor Squeal Diagnosis
Noise Types
Squeal (high pitch)
- Wear indicator touching - time for pads
- New pads bedding in
- Grit between pad and rotor
Metal grind (constant)
- Pad worn to backing plate - replace now
- Rotor lip formed
Clunk (on braking)
- Loose/dry caliper pins
- Loose rotor screws
- Suspension play shown under braking
Steps
- Check pad thickness (<3mm replace)
- Check rotor surface (grooves/lip)
- Lube caliper pins, check boots
- Road test
