Steering Wheel Off-Center but Car Tracks Straight: Fixes
Symptom and Causes
Car tracks straight but the wheel is off-center. Common causes:
- Bad toe adjustment: Unequal tie rod lengths
- Wheel not locked straight during alignment
- Rack assembly deviation
- After collision repair without centering
Why It Tracks Straight
Total toe is correct - the wheel is just angularly offset from the tires.
Fixes
- Proper: On the alignment rack, lock wheel straight, adjust tie rods (one in, one out, keep total toe) until centered
- Quick: Respline the steering wheel (only if wheel itself installed crooked)
- Road test to confirm
Notes
- Never adjust only one side (changes toe, causes pull/wear)
- Check tie rod boots after adjusting
