What Is a Strut Top Mount? Damage Symptoms and Replacement
What Is a Top Mount
The strut top mount (top mount) sits between the piston rod top and the body - the joint carrying body weight on the strut.
Structure
- Rubber: Cushions impacts, isolates vibration
- Metal frame: Connects body to strut
- With bearing: Some integrate a thrust bearing for steering
Failure Symptoms
- "Clunk" over speed bumps, tower noise
- Harsher ride, vague steering feel
- Visible cracks, sag, offset
- "Pop" when turning in place (bearing part)
Replacement
- Respect mounting direction marks
- Check rod threads, torque nut to spec
- Inspect strut, dust cover, bump stop together
Huami supplies complete mounts, thrust bearings, dust covers; custom machined cores/tubes available.
