Strut Tower Noise: Aging Mount Sound Signs and Replacement
Sound Signatures
- "Clunk" over bumps: Aged mount rubber
- "Pop" turning in place: Worn strut bearing
- "Squeak" on bumps: Rubber-metal friction
- Loose feel: Collapsed mount
Inspection
- Steer lock-to-lock in place, listen for pops
- Bounce body, listen at tower
- Lift and inspect mount for cracks/sag
- Check tower bolt torque
Replacement
Replace mount if cracked/sagging/noisy; bearing if binding or loose. Often done together (same labor).
